Deadline  Now Extended to May 7, 2025

Real ID is a government standard of identification which will be required for certain instances, including flying. The deadline to get one has been extended to May 7, 2025, due to the backlog caused by Covid. This post links the information you need to know.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.

Guidelines for the Real ID come from the Department of Homeland Security. Real ID will be required for flying, even within the United States. Real ID will be required for entering Federal buildings, if they require identification for entry.

You will need specific documents to get your Real ID. They include  your driver's license, birth certificate or a passport, social security card or pay stub with the social security number on it, two proofs of Kansas residence (not junk mail), and proof of legal name change, such as a marriage license.
