The State Library of Kansas has recently purchased several books related to working practices in libraries.
The Weeding Handbook: A Shelf-by-Shelf Guide by Rebecca Vnuk focuses on Dewey decimal collections. She explains several reasons for regular collection weeding. It frees up shelf space making the library shelves more attractive and efficient for users. Weeding implements collection development best practices. Outdated and offensive materials are purged. Some categories, such as medical, computers, and technology, become outdated rapidly. Librarians should watch for materials that do not match current diversity and inclusion standards and remove books with racism.
The author explains how to establish weeding practices. The plan should involve the library staff, inform the public, break down the work into segments, and include replacement of materials. If it has not been done recently, library staff should establish or update collection development plan. Interviews, samples, and additional resources are included.

The Public Library Director’s HR Toolkit by Kate Hall and Kathy Parker is an all-in-one guide to every step of employment. The authors share their experiences in the following areas: job descriptions, hiring, and onboarding; employee training, development, and engagement; guidance to develop workplace procedures and policies; feedback and communication with staff; and succession planning, legal issues, discipline, and termination. They have included scenario practice, worksheet samples, checklists, and additional resources.
